Peter is recognised as one of the foremost experts on EU affairs, with an in-depth knowledge of the political systems of the EU and many European countries. With vast experience of how the internal mechanisms of the EU work, in particular the Council of Ministers, Peter has for over 30 years worked at the interface of politics and business.

Peter's most recent position was as Germany's Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU in Brussels, with the rank of Ambassador. He retired from the German civil service in July 2008, after having served for over 35 years in both the Ministry of Economics and the Foreign Office.

During his time in Brussels Peter represented Germany on a vast range of policies relevant to business, ranging from energy, environment and telecommunications, to competitiveness, consumer protection and agriculture. He played a central role in negotiating with the other EU Member States and, during the German Presidency of the EU in 2007, with the European Parliament and the Commission.

Earlier in his career, Peter was Director for European Affairs in the Economics Ministry in Bonn and later Berlin, headed Germany's office to the multilateral trade negotiations in Geneva for 9 years and helped to set up the World Trade Organisation. Before that he worked on energy dossiers in Bonn, Oslo and Washington and was Head of office to two German Economics Ministers in the 1980's.

Peter is a fully trained lawyer, with a PhD in law from Freiburg/Br. University and an LL.M. from London University (London School of Economics and Political Science). He speaks German, English, French and Norwegian.
